Local leads at 70 sites all over the world are in the midst of preparations to engage their local communities in building and creating better tools to explore and communicate about space. We invited Madrid local lead Addy Nunez Beltre to share about why he and his team got involved in Space Apps and their plans to lead the event in Spain. Today I want to start this note with a very special message to all those who, without being the fastest, constant or bravest manage to get remembered, they do not know the rules but change or invent new ones and win trophies more important than gold - not because they have fans but because of the people who love them - to welcome you all to the biggest challenge: the world International Space Apps Challenge 2013.

As Local Leader for Madrid (Spain) and supporting the Local Leader for Azua (Dominican Republic), if you hear me talk about the early days of Space Apps, I wanted to enter this world of technology, but I never thought it could be through NASA. Challenges of this magnitude could inspire a great technology company.

There are several things I can learn, as CEO of my small startup; NASA has done things well and I think at a good pace. There are several things we can learn from NASA and its efforts: let’s look at everything that drives NASA and how they are changing the world for the better.

I think Space Apps Challenge fulfills a social mission to make the world more open and connected - I’m doing it because it was something I really wanted personally, and I believe it was something that had to exist globally. Contributors, media, team leaders, NASA team, and all that is part of this whole ecosystem to me means being able to build something that causes a big change in the world.

During this time I have moved fast, I built things and learned fast all that is part of Space Apps Challenge 2013, more afraid of missing opportunities than anything else. But this is precisely what keeps us one step further in a changing world, with the support of a great team from NASA and above all the most important, a very good team of people with a similar vision, all the local leads in every city, collaborators (in my case collaborations with teams Madrid Emprende and Madrid International Lab www.madridemprende.com) … we are building something great with people with the same vision.

People will remember you for the good things that you end up doing and above all I am learning a few things: one is to focus on having a clear direction on what we build and the other is trying to build the best team. I’m convinced that in Space Apps Challenge 2013 we have those two things and we are doing really well.

Hoy quiero empezar esta nota lanzando un mensaje muy especial a todas aquellas personas que sin ser los más rápidos, constantes o valientes consiguen ser recordados, que no conocen las reglas, las cambian o inventan unas nuevas, que ganan trofeos mucho más importantes que el oro porque no tienen admiradores sino gente que les quieren, a todos vosotros bienvenido al desafío más grande el mundo International Space Apps Challenge 2013. Como Leader Manager Local Madrid y Support Team Leader Manager Local Azua, si me escuchas hablar de los primeros días de Space Apps, te digo que yo quería entrar en ese mundo de tecnológicas, pero que nunca pensé que sería a través de NASA Tech. Pensaba que los desafíos de tal envergadura tendrían que construirlos una gran empresa dedicada a la tecnología, ahora hay varias cosas que puedo pensar y sobre todo aprender, como CEO de mi pequeña startup pienso que Space Apps Challenge cumple ya 2 años, se ha convertido en su propio imperio abierto a la colaboración global, la NASA ha hecho cosas bien hechas y creo que a buen ritmo, hay varias cosas que podemos aprender de la NASA y sus pasos: echemos un vistazo a todo aquello que impulsa NASA y a cómo su equipo está cambiando el mundo para mejor y pienso que Space Apps Challenge fué construido para cumplir una misión social de hacer el mundo más abierto y conectado, como Leader Manager Local Madrid y support team Azua, lo estoy haciendo porque era algo que realmente quería a nivel personal, y porque creo que era algo que tenía que existir a nivel global, aunque no estaba muy seguro de que pudiese desempeñar ese papel, dentro de Space Apps las colaboraciones, trabajo en equipo y todas esas cosas me importaran por que participamos de todas oportunidades desarrolladas para llegar a tener éxito de una manera significativa. Colaboradores, soportes, líderes de equipos, equipo NASA, y todo lo que sea parte de todo este ecosistema para mí significa ser capaz de construir algo que provoque un gran cambio en el mundo.

Durante este tiempo me he movido rápido, he construido cosas y he aprendido rápido de todo lo que forma parte de Space Apps Challenge 2013, con más miedo de perder oportunidades que de cualquier otra cosa, una gran experiencia a favor de los cambios o de pivotar, pero precisamente eso es lo que mantiene a un paso más allá en un mundo en constante cambio, con el apoyo de un gran equipo detrás NASA team y sobre todo lo más importante, es un equipo muy bueno de gente con una visión parecida, creo que cada leader manager de cada ciudad, equipo de apoyo de NASA, colaboradores (en mi caso colaboraciones con los equipos de Madrid Emprende y Madrid International Lab www.madridemprende.com)… vamos construyendo algo grande con gente con la misma visión, cada cosas parte de Space Apps Challenge 2013 completa las habilidades del resto, la gente, a lo largo, no te recordará por los errores que cometas, no te van a juzgar por eso, la gente te recordará por las cosas buenas que acabes haciendo y sobre todo estoy aprendiendo un par de cosas, una es centrarme en tener una dirección clara en lo que construimos y la otra es intentar construir el mejor equipo para hacer esos y convencido estoy que en Space Apps Challenge 2013 hemos conseguido esas dos cosas y estamos haciendo las cosas bastante súper bien.
